WCN 2007 Host City Destination: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The idyllic setting that is Rio offers its visitors and the participants of WCN 2007 much more beyond the vibrant carnivals for which the city is so famous. A city of contrasts, Rio de Janeiro is Brazil’s cultural center and a favorite holiday destination with its enticing stretches of golden beaches. Rio is blessed with breathtaking natural beauty, such as the unique panoramic views that inspire taking a ride on the Sugar Loaf – an icon of Rio tourism. Enjoy the spectacular vista of the city’s unique landscapes, returning back to base to tropical vegetation and rare plant species some of which can only be found in two niche points on the entire planet. Another must-see is Christ the Redeemer, heralded by the locals as the “must-see” of Rio. This impressive Christ figure stands at the top of the 2,329 ft high Corcovado Mountain at the heart of Tijuca Forest, and can be viewed face on having hiked up some 220 steps (for the more energetic), or alternatively transported via modern panoramic elevators. The views from the Corcovado will most certainly be unforgettable. After exploring some of the many attractions that Rio has to offer, visitors and Congress participants may enjoy the colorful and all embracing Carioca spirit of the people of Rio by exploring the district of Ipanema. This famous meeting point for locals offers the very best of Bosa Nova and provides a lively blend of beach, bars and boutiques. Alternatively you may head off to the Copacabana Palace, one of the first hotels in Rio to be built on the seashore that still retains the sense of charm, glamour and elegance of yesteryear – so much so that you can easily conjure up the moment when Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers danced together for their very first time.
