RoFAR – Foundation for Anemia Research, an independent, scientist-led, and internationally active Medical Research Charity, administers a set donation provided by F. Hoffmann-La Roche. RoFAR independently supports groundbreaking scientific work, both basic and clinical, which topics include investigation of anaemia and erythropoietin and related topics ranging from hypoxia-sensing to the organ-protective role of erythropoietin and the understanding of iron metabolism. Since 2004, RoFAR has distributed over 5.4 million US dollars to outstanding research projects. Progress of supported projects are published twice annually in a bi-annual report. There are two cycles of RoFAR awards each year. Timelines for the cycles and the submission deadline for application of an award are published on the RoFAR website. The first step in the application process is to submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) via the RoFAR website (www.rofar.org), which once submitted, is reviewed by the RoFAR Scientific Advisory Board (SAB). Applicants who are considered by the SAB to have submitted the most compelling LOIs are then invited to proceed to the next stage and submit a full application, among which award winners are selected. In addition to the regular competition cycles, RoFAR now invites scientists and institutions to submit applications for a special grant of up to 1.25 million US dollars. RoFAR is particularly interested in innovative proposals, involving established and junior researchers, which provide proof of principle and/or translational research, particularly studies which have potential for results to be transferred into clinical practice. As with the regular grant cycles, an LOI for the special grant must be submitted via the RoFAR website. RoFAR is committed to its mission of fostering innovative anaemia-related research and of making a major contribution to the scientific community by encouraging scientists to apply their skills and intellect to furthering knowledge and understanding in this field.
