The ISN Alfred Newton Richards Award was established by ISN in 1986 to recognize outstanding basic research in fields relevant to nephrology. The 2007 recipient is Richard P. Lifton (Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, USA). The Award honors his contribution to the understanding of the molecular and genetic basis for renal and cardiovascular disease, particularly for studies of the mechanisms of sodium and potassium handling by the kidney and the role of mitochondrial genetic mutations. The Award also recognizes his role in connecting traditional renal physiology with the modern sciences of genetics and molecular biology.

The ISN Amgen International Prize for Therapeutic Advancement in Nephrology

Amgen

Presenter: John Dirks, Canada
Award Winner: Eduardo Slatopolsky, USA
When and Where: The 2007 US $ 50,000 prize, a commemorative crystal award, and a framed certificate will be presented at the beginning of the Donald Seldin Keynote Lecture, Sunday April 22, from 11:00 – 11:50 (the Plenary Hall – Pavilion 5).

For 2007, Eduardo Slatopolsky (Washington University, St. Louis, USA) has been selected as the recipient of this prize. Eduardo Slatopolsky has dedicated his entire professional career to the study of the kidney and for more than 30 years he has been at the forefront of major scientific achievements.

His experimental research in mineral metabolism in the clinical arena has lead to profound changes in the everyday practice of nephrology. The selection committee in particular praised “his lifetime contribution to the role of phosphate retention in the pathophysiology of renal failure and its treatment”.

Lillian Jean Kaplan International Prize for the Advancement in the Understanding of Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)

KaplanPKD
